Women’s Homelessness Is a Growing Problem—Denver Is Pioneering a Solution

DENVER—On a cloudless February night, volunteers welcomed Yesenia MacDonald to their cozy Denver church, directed her to a cot adorned with a homemade duvet, and handed her a bowl of steaming organic red chili posole.

Like a growing number of women nationwide, MacDonald ended up on the streets after a cascading series of tragedies left her destitute. Years of unpaid work caring for family, poor health benefits and a persistent gender wage gap that makes it difficult to save ensures these women lack the resources to weather an economic crisis.

“I lost many jobs because I have a mental illness,” said the Brooklyn native, as she lounged in a chair resting against a wall of pastel paintings of volunteers at the 10:30 Catholic Community Church. “Someday I want to go back to college. “

Colorado, Denver nowhere to be seen on new corporate investment list – Denver Business Journal

The state of Colorado and the city of Denver were nowhere to be found on a list of top states and cities for national corporate relocations and expansions.

Texas and Nebraska were the top two states in Atlanta-based Site Selection magazine’s top areas for corporate facility investment. Texas had 594 new projects in 2017 to lead the nation in total projects and Nebraska had 110 projects per capita to lead that division. Colorado wasn’t in the top 10 in either new or per capita projects.

In the list of top metro areas, the Chicago metro area led the magazine’s list with 402 projects, followed by Houston area (196), Dallas-Fort Worth (192), Atlanta area (131), New York area (128), Cincinnati (111), Columbus, Ohio (99), Washington, D.C. area (82), Indianapolis area (73) and Los Angeles (72).

The shop plans to charge an entry fee to the bring-your-own marijuana space. Customers won’t be able to smoke, but the business will allow vaping or edible marijuana products.

It’s not clear when customers can start consuming marijuana products at the business. City officials say inspectors from several departments have to visit the business and sign off before the license is formally issued...

Agrihoods: A Food-Real Estate Symbiosis

Community gardens, urban agriculture, or cohousing communities are nothing new. But so-called “agrihoods” certainly are, with developers quickly learning that incorporating healthy food in development projects can pay dividends.

The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative, a nonprofit founded in 2011, defines an agrihood as an alternative neighborhood growth model that positions agriculture as the centerpiece of a mixed-use urban development. Residents can not only enjoy regular amenities such as a swimming pool or a fitness center, but also benefit from healthy food coming from their own community and their own hands.

Particularly appealing to farm-to-table-loving Millennials, agrihoods cannot only bring residents together and raise their sense of community, but also promote sustainable liv...
